The history of the Society for the Study of Spinal Disorders began in 1983 when a small group of orthopaedic surgeons and rehabilitation specialists with a preference for spinal deviations decided to found the Iberian Group for the Study of Spinal Deformities (GIEDER). The society grew rapidly and in 1992 it was decided to extend the scope of study to all spinal pathology, becoming the current GEER.
