This module will enable learners to understand the individual and societal impact of ageing and to recognise the specific needs of older patients seeking care for spine-related symptoms. Learners will gain knowledge of normal ageing processes of the spine, including loss of health, frailty, and common comorbidities that influence health outcomes in older individuals with spine pain. The module will support learners in performing a comprehensive biopsychosocial history and a physical examination adapted to older patients. It will also address the appropriate use of imaging, specialty tests, and specialist referrals, as well as the correct interpretation of radiological descriptions of the ageing spine. Finally, learners will be guided in planning evidence-based treatment strategies tailored to older people with common spine conditions, including low back pain, osteoporosis, spinal stenosis, inflammatory diseases, fractures, and tumours.
