EUROSPINE's IDEA Initiative

Inclusion, Diversity, Equity & Accessibility

EUROSPINE is committed to fostering a professional environment where every member of the spine community feels respected, represented and empowered to contribute. Recognising that diversity strengthens innovation and improves patient care, Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility (IDEA) are at the heart of EUROSPINE’s strategic vision.

Inclusion

Creating an environment where every professional voice is valued.

Diversity

Strengthening our community through different perspectives and experiences.

Equity

Promoting fair access to opportunities, participation and leadership.

Accessibility

Removing barriers to meaningful participation in EUROSPINE activities.

From Themis to the EUROSPINE IDEA Initiative

Formerly known as the Themis project, the initiative has evolved into the EUROSPINE IDEA Initiative, reflecting a broader and more comprehensive commitment to creating a fair, inclusive and accessible professional landscape.

This evolution signifies more than a change in name. It represents a maturation of purpose – from exploration and assessment to meaningful and sustainable action across the spine community.

From Evidence to Action

The initial phase of the IDEA Initiative focused on the systematic collection and analysis of data to better understand representation, participation and potential barriers within EUROSPINE’s structures and activities.

This phase has now been successfully completed, providing an evidence base that highlights both strengths and opportunities for improvement. With these insights in hand, EUROSPINE is entering a pivotal decision-making phase, translating data-driven findings into strategic actions for a more inclusive and equitable future.

Strategic Priorities for EUROSPINE

Building on the results of the IDEA assessment, EUROSPINE is considering several key actions to ensure long-term and measurable impact across its governance, education, research and professional activities.

01

Establishment of a Permanent IDEA Committee

A dedicated committee will oversee the implementation, monitoring and continuous development of IDEA-related initiatives. The committee will seek diverse representation across gender, geography, professional background and career stage, embedding inclusivity within EUROSPINE’s governance.

02

Integration of IDEA into Governance and Strategy

EUROSPINE aims to formally integrate IDEA principles into its statutes, strategic plans and decision-making processes, including leadership structures, committees and advisory bodies.

03

Measurable Goals and Key Performance Indicators

To support accountability and transparency, EUROSPINE will establish measurable objectives and KPIs, including:

  • Balanced gender representation in leadership and faculty
  • Broader geographical and multidisciplinary participation
  • Equitable access to educational and research opportunities
  • Enhanced accessibility for individuals with disabilities

Regular monitoring and the publication of an annual IDEA report will support continuous evaluation and improvement.

04

Inclusive and Transparent Policies

EUROSPINE will develop and implement policies that promote fairness and equal opportunity, including:

  • Transparent selection processes for faculty, awards and scholarships
  • Guidelines for inclusive language and communication
  • Codes of conduct that reinforce respectful and safe professional environments

05

Mentorship and Leadership Development

EUROSPINE plans to introduce mentorship and sponsorship programmes supporting early-career professionals and individuals from underrepresented groups. These initiatives will foster leadership development and strengthen the future of the spine community.

06

Education and Awareness

Training addressing unconscious bias, inclusive leadership and cultural competence will be integrated into EUROSPINE’s educational portfolio, helping members develop awareness and champion inclusive professional practices.

07

Accessibility and Inclusive Participation

Ensuring that professionals can fully engage in EUROSPINE activities is a central priority. Planned actions include:

  • Enhancing physical and digital accessibility at events and on online platforms
  • Providing financial support mechanisms to facilitate participation from low-resource settings
  • Offering flexible and hybrid engagement opportunities

08

Partnerships and Global Collaboration

EUROSPINE seeks to collaborate with international societies and stakeholders to share best practices, benchmark progress and amplify the global impact of IDEA initiatives.

Building a Culture of Belonging

Beyond policies and programmes, the EUROSPINE IDEA Initiative aspires to cultivate a culture of belonging, where diversity is celebrated and every professional voice is valued. By embedding IDEA principles across education, research, clinical practice and leadership, EUROSPINE aims to enhance collaboration, innovation and ultimately the quality of patient care.

Transparency and Accountability

Transparency is essential to building trust and ensuring sustained progress. EUROSPINE is committed to regularly communicating achievements and challenges, enabling members and stakeholders to participate in this journey. Continuous feedback mechanisms will help ensure that the initiative remains responsive to the evolving needs of the spine community.

Looking Ahead

The transition from Themis to the EUROSPINE IDEA Initiative marks an important milestone in EUROSPINE’s commitment to shaping a more inclusive and equitable future. With the data collection and analysis phase completed, the society is now positioned to move from evidence towards meaningful and sustainable action.

Through IDEA, EUROSPINE reaffirms its dedication to empowering all members of the spine community – embracing diversity, advancing equity, practising inclusion and improving accessibility.

A more inclusive spine community strengthens EUROSPINE’s mission to advance spine care for the benefit of patients worldwide.
