The Association was founded in 1947 and has 1068 members as of January 2019.

The purpose of the association is to:

• Promote the development of spinal surgery in Norway
• Unite orthopaedic surgeons and neurosurgeons with a common interest in spinal surgery
• Protect the professional and economic interests of its members
• Provide expert advice in connection with appointments to spinal surgical positions
•  Work for the establishment of spinal surgical departments
