The Finnish Society of Spine Surgery was founded in 2001 as a joint organisation primarily for orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons who treat spinal conditions. The society currently has around 100 members, of which two-thirds are orthopedic surgeons and one-third are neurosurgeons. Among the society’s most significant achievements are the creation of a national spine surgery fellowship training programme that integrates both specialties, and the establishment of the FinSpine registry — a statutory national spine surgery registry now run by the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL). The Finnish Society of Spine Surgery organises an annual spring meeting for its members and an annual autumn meeting as an educational event for a broader audience. It also aims to foster strong collaboration with other national and international spine societies — a prime example being its close involvement with EUROSPINE and EuSSAB.
