Types of grant application for EUROSPINE Task Force Research (TFR)

Development Grant up to € 10,000
This grant aims to help taking a good idea to a feasible grant application. The funds are intended to help develop a pilot study.
Some examples are: methodological advice (epidemiologist, biostatistician), discussion with collaborators, formal literature review, translate outcome measures, test the feasibility of trial material.
The application must link to the intended pilot study, indicate a timeline, and give a detailed budget.

Pilot Study Grant up to € 30,000 for one year
This grant is for a formal pilot study prior to a full funding application.
The study design may be longitudinal cohort, clinical trial, or laboratory experiment.
The pilot study should include a model for the research suggested, and demonstrate the importance of the topic.
The application should justify the methodology used (outcome instruments, statistical analysis, limitations and bias), and explain what the pilot intends to achieve (e.g. data for power calculation; recruitment feasibility).
The application must link to the intended main study, indicate a timeline, and give a detailed budget.

Main Study Grant up to € 100,000 total over 3 years
This grant is for formal experimental or observational studies answering a specific clinical or a basic science question.
The study design must be robust and appropriate for the question (e.g. longitudinal cohort; randomised controlled trial; laboratory tests on specimens).
The methods must be fully detailed, appropriate for the aims, and duly piloted for feasibility (e.g. recruitment, specimen availability, reliability of outcome measures, power calculations, statistical analysis).
The proposal must demonstrate the importance of the question, discuss limitations and risks, indicate the timeline, and give a detailed budget.
