European Spine Journal

The ESJ ist the second highest rated spine journal worldwide
ESJ: Impact Factor rised to 2,396!

The Impact Factor of the European Spine Journal (ESJ) has advanced from rank 10 to 8 of all indexed orthopedic magazines (49). Spine , which was still number 1 two years ago, is reduced to rank 5. The European Spine Journal is and remains the number 1 magazine within the orthopedic field in Europe. The JBJA British , which used to be the top rated magazine within Europe clearly fell back behind ESJ . The ESJ is even ranked before relevant magazines like Clinical Orthopaedics, Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma and Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery .

Within the top eight journals worldwide, seven are of American origin and from these eight three are of purely basic scientific character. Two magazines, like the American Journal of Sport Medicine and Arthroscopy are dealing with the huge area of sports medicine and orthopaedics.

Conclusively you can see, that from the field "classical orthopedic magazines" only the JBJS American is still ranked above the European Spine Journal and Spine. From the ten magazines who are dealing today exclusively with spine diseases and/or surgery, the European Spine Journal has risen to number 2 after Spine . The Impact Factor of the European Spine Journal increased of more than 18 % between 2007 and 2008 and climbed from 2,021 to 2,396!

Even if one places the European Spine Journal into the context of the neurological magazines, of which there are 154 indexed, we made progress. Being still considered as mostly surgical, we are all the same behind relevant titles like the Journal of Neurological Surgery, Neurosurgery and Spine (all American magazines) on rank number 4 in relation of the surgical journals within the neuroscience field.

This is quite a track record for a journal which was founded against all odds 17 years ago.

There is more to come: The ESJ will soon start an “Open Operating Theatre” with audiovisual medias related to practical surgical procedures and a “Grand Round Section” within the ESJ with Vincent Arlet(USA) and Michael Pfeiffer (Germany) as Deputy Editors.
